my different roles:

scouting mom

soccer/futsal mom
baseball/tee-ball mom
band mom
rock collector’s mom

and i can now add warhammer mom to that list.

for Christmas this past year forest got a dwarf starter set.  and last saturday he finally got to start his 6-week academy classes where he goes and learns to paint his figures and play the game.

ok backtrack a little.  warhammer is a role-play game using miniatures you put together and paint to your liking.  the games are played using a set of rules, and dice.  you may have an objective like recover that tank or take that fort or it may just be a game of annihilation.  die human scum!!!!

games workshop is the company that makes these games and their shops are intriguing to me.  we had one at the supermall and the boys loved to go in and check out all the miniatures on display.  during the week the shop may as well not even be open because it was almost always empty but on the weekends the sweaty, hygiene deficient boys and men would spill out into the food court.  they finally moved out of the mall into a much larger store across the parking lot.

the stores have walls full of all the miniatures for sale but most of the space is taken up by tables made to look like different terrains.  on weekends the stores host tournaments and give away prizes to the winners.  the guys that show up are interesting.  of course there are the typical ones that you would expect to see, trench coats, or fatigues, greasy shaggy hair, you know who i’m talking about.  pick any of aaron’s high school friends and they would fit right in.  but the ones i find interesting were the odd balls, the three guys with shaved heads, baseball jerseys and upper bodies that looked like they should have been at a gym instead, or the teenager dressed in name brand clothes, with the wind swept haircut and a tan.  he  looked like he could have been a jock.  but what i really loved were the younger boys who probably wouldn’t fit in anywhere else, completely accepted, having a blast, no drugs and no alcohol involved.

so anyway, here we go with another hobby in the family.  :)
